Pond dipping  *** Take care around water.  Always go with an adult.***

We are very lucky to have access to lots of ponds and streams in our local area.  Beneath the surface of the water, there's an unseen world of amazing wildlife ready to be discovered. What's lurking in the depths of a pond near you? Maybe a mysterious alien-like dragonfly nymph, or a great diving beetle perhaps!  Get dipping!

See attached-

  • Guidance on how to pond dip.
  • Spotter sheet to help you identify what you catch.

Flower spotting.

Is it a weed or a flower?

Lots of families said that they really enjoyed last week’s walk with a focus so we’re going to do something similar this week.

Watch this video clip to get you in the zone!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zpxnyrd/articles/z3wpsbk

Go for a lovely walk.  No need to write or sketch, just enjoy being outside and looking a little bit more closely at the range of flowers you see.

Things to think about

Have the flowers been planted or are they wild?

Is it a weed?

Why do dandelions grow so easily and seem to be everywhere?

Why are flowers so brightly coloured?

What different colours, shapes of leaves and symmetry can you see?

I’ve attached 2 plant spotter sheets below so you can bring them up on your phone when you’re out if you need to.  I’m not the best with plant names so I thought that they might help!

RE

May is the month of Mary.

Say the Hail Mary (words attached below)

What do you think of when you remember Mary?

Catholic Christians around the world think of Mary in a special way during the month of May.  We respect and love Mary because she was chosen by God to be the mother of His son Jesus.

The powerpoint attached below tells a little bit about how we celebrate the month of Mary.  Read it together.

Can you pray the hail Mary together with your grown-up?  It is quite tricky.

When you think of Mary, what do you remember?

-When the angel visited her to tell her she was going to have a baby.

-In Bibles and holy books she is often shown wearing blue so that it’s obvious who she is.

-The Hail Mary is a special prayer about Mary.

-Jesus’ birth

-When she lost Jesus in the temple.

-Mary when Jesus was crucified.

Activity- When I think of Mary…

Draw a picture to show what you think of when you remember Mary.  Try to make it pretty!

Write a sentence about Mary to accompany the picture.

Put the picture somewhere that you can see it so that each time you pass it you can say thank you.

Pentecost

Choose an activity-

  • Make a simple paper kite.

https://www.instructables.com/id/Easy-Paper-Kite-for-Kids/

This kite doesn’t fly very high but you will feel a tug on the string/ the power of the wind  if there’s a breeze.

*** Beware of power lines.

I have to put the health and safety warning in!!!

  • Draw a picture of what happened at Pentecost and add speech bubbles.

Before Jesus went back to his Father in heaven he promised that a special helper would be sent to the disciples. This helper was the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is often shown as a tongue of fire or wind.  I particularly like the power of the Holy Spirit being described as wind because you can’t see wind but you can see the effect of it.  The Holy Spirit gave the disciples the courage to go out and tell everyone they met about God.

Read the attached Pentecost Story document below.

Questions for discussion

Who was in the room when the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost?

What were the signs of the Holy Spirit?

How do you think Mary and the disciples felt?

Why do you think they felt like that?

The Ascension

Draw a picture of Jesus and his special friends.  Add  speech bubbles to retell the words of Jesus’ promise.

After Jesus rose from the dead, he told his special friends that he wouldn’t be with them for long.  He said that he was going to go back to his Father in heaven.  He told them to trust in God and to trust in him.   A few weeks later  Jesus said he was going to heaven to prepare a place for them.  Jesus wanted them to know that there is a place for in heaven for everyone who believes in God.   Jesus told his friends that they had a special job to do when he was gone; he told them to tell all of the world about God .  He told them not to be frightened and that God was  going to send a special helper, the Holy Spirit  to be with them and help them.  Then suddenly Jesus was carried up into the sky and the disciples looked up in amazement.  This was the Ascension of Jesus into heaven.   Watch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8B89mylBb4

Questions to discuss:

Why were Jesus’ friends sad again?

What was the promise Jesus gave to his friends?

Who was the helper and guide?

Who would send the Holy Spirit?

How did this make Jesus’ friends feel?

Week 2 Lesson 1

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/

Topic

What continent do we live in?

Create a fact file for a European Country.

Read ‘Go Jetters Europe’ attached below, to re-cap what a continent is and to find out a little bit about Europe.

Look at England and France on the World Map.  Which continent are they both in?  Watch these video clips about France:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zyhp34j/articles/zhw7vk7

Make a fact file (it could be an A4 poster or maybe a mini book) about any European country (other than those in the UK) that you’re interested in,  but France might be the easiest!.  Try to include:

  • the continent it is in
  • national flag
  • capital city
  • languages spoken
  • currency used
  • popular food
  • famous landmarks/ something it’s famous for

Science

New topic-

 Seasonal Changes

Make a Seasons poster

Split a page in 4 and label the sections with Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.  Remember a capital letter for the seasons.  In each section write the months of the year that belong there.

Then draw and label anything you remember about that season.  Try to include the weather, the clothes you wear, what the different trees look like, the plants/ flowers you might see outside.  Can you remember when special days like Easter, Christmas, Guy Fawkes, your birthday occur?

Now watch-

Draw and label anything else you have forgotten!

Have fun! I’d love to see your creations.

Monday 23rd March 2020

Good Morning Year 1,

I hope you have had a lovely weekend.

Now it is time to get started on your homework packs.  Decide what you are going to do and then write a list like I do in the afternoon.

Ask your grown ups to help you with the work to make sure you get it right.

There is plenty to do within the packs, but  I will keep my eyes peeled for anything else that may be useful, and I will put it on this home work site.

If you have any queries, email us at info@st-charles.derbyshire.sch.uk

Keep, safe, work hard and have fun.

A big hug from Mrs Beaumont.
