This week we will be focusing on this video as it provides a wide range of writing opportunities for us to explore.

The year is 1953 and Jacqueline Auriol, the daughter-in-law of the French president is strapped into her jet plan about to create history.  This 7-minute film, told in Jacqueline’s own words is told through a series of flashbacks describing the events which allowed her to become the first European female to break the sound barrier.

Answer the following questions:

  • Why do you think people want to do amazing things like break the speed barrier?
  • Do we know any other females who we would call heroes?
  • Who is your hero and why?
  • How does the film maker create different moods in the film?

Topic

What are contours?

Where are the UK’s mountains? What are the highest areas of land?

Using the map (attached to the website) and a brown pencil, shade the main areas of high ground in the UK. Label each one and find out the height of its highest peak.

EXT: which county is this peak found in?

How Is Land Height Shown on Maps? On more detailed maps, contour lines are used to link areas of ground which are the same height above sea level. Usually, these are shown in 5 or 10m intervals depending on the level of detail the map shows. The closer the lines are together, the steeper the slope will be. The more spaced apart they are, the more gentle the slope.

Using the Potato Contours Activity Sheet, children create their own contour map of a potato. Give children a more bumpy potato to map.
