Space Monkey – It’s not a planet, it’s our home.

https://www.literacyshed.com/space-monkey.html

This week we will be focusing on this video as it provides a wide range of writing opportunities for us to explore.

Please watch the video carefully, then watch the video again, stopping it regularly to make notes (you may want to use a mind map to jot down your ideas). What is happening? Why is it happening? How might the chimp feel? What is the purpose of the video? What effect does the music have? Why do you think the chimp’s facial expressions change when he sees Earth? How do you think the chimp feels when he steps on Earth again for the first time in 65 years?

Today I would like you to describe the chimp using descriptive language (expanded noun phrases, prepositional phrases, MAPSO, show not tell, adverbials, senses, parenthesis etc). Really focus on the chimp’s appearance (as the video provides a close up of his face you can carefully select vocabulary to describe these features).

Topic

What is a mountain?

Research a mountain (you may choose one of the following: Mount Everest, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Fuji, Mont Blanc, Ben Nevis, Mount Olympus, Snowdon).

Create an information leaflet about your chosen mountain. Remember to include: A title, sub-headings, pictures (you may draw the mountain you have chosen), diagrams and illustrations, information, rhetorical questions, bullet points etc.

I would also like you to look at the features of a mountain powerpoint that I have added below. Label the mountain you have drawn on your information leaflet and include the follow labels: summit, snow line, outcrop, valley, slope, plateau, tree line, ridge, foot and face. These may not all be applicable to the mountain you have chosen, but include the ones that are.

Please email me your examples, I can’t wait to see them!

Write a narrative in 3rd person on the chimp’s experience in space and then the journey returning to Earth. Focus on the chimp’s emotions (use emotive and figurative language – MAPSO). What would the chimp be thinking and feeling? Also, use descriptive language to describe Earth (stop the video at 2 minutes 57) and the concrete jungle at the end of the video. Use show not tell to describe the sadness at the end of the clip. You could end the narrative with the line… and then a tear cascaded down his face.

RE

The Wonders of Creation

See the powerpoint below.

Your task this week is create a prayer, using ‘The Canticle of the Sun’ as a model.

Start each line with, ‘We praise you Lord, for …’ and then think of different things in nature or creation that you would like to thank God for.

Give each thing a role in a family and talk about why it is special to you / how it makes our world better.

Eg if I want to thank God for water I might say: We praise you Lord, for Brother Water, who refreshes us and cleanses us with his purity.

You should also illustrate your prayer.
